Take the Photos Before the Moment Is Gone

Why the Ordinary Moments Matter Most

A mother smiles at her young son while holding her three boys during a golden hour family photography session in an open field in Abilene, Texas, capturing a genuine moment of love and connection.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how often we tell ourselves, “We’ll do it later.”

We’ll take family photos next year.

We’ll schedule the session after life calms down.

We’ll wait until the house is finished, the kids are a little older, or we finally feel comfortable in front of the camera.

We convince ourselves there’s always more time.

But life has a funny way of moving while we’re busy waiting.

As an Abilene photographer, I’ve learned something that surprises a lot of people: the photos my clients treasure the most usually aren’t from the “perfect” moments. They’re from the ordinary ones they almost didn’t book.

The toddler who refused to wear shoes. The baby who wouldn’t stop giggling. The windswept hair. The missing front teeth. The way two people naturally look at each other when they forget the camera is there.

Those are the moments that become tomorrow’s nostalgia.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I’m so glad we didn’t wait.”

Not because everything went perfectly.

Because life kept moving.

The kids grew. The grandparents changed. Someone moved away. A favorite family home was sold. A season quietly came to an end without anyone realizing it would be the last.

None of us know which ordinary Tuesday will someday become a memory we wish we could step back into.

That’s why I believe photos aren’t really about today.

They’re for five years from now, when your little one no longer reaches for your hand.

They’re for ten years from now, when you laugh at the outfits you once questioned wearing.

They’re for decades from now, when your children are showing these images to their own families and saying, “This was home.”

Why We Think We Have More Time

It’s easy to believe there will always be another season.

Another spring for family photos.

Another birthday.

Another anniversary.

Another summer when everyone can get together.

But life doesn’t always give us another chance.

Children grow faster than we expect. Parents grow older before we notice. Friendships shift, homes change, and seasons quietly pass by while we’re busy making plans for “someday.”

I’ve never had someone tell me they regretted taking photos with the people they love.

I have, however, heard people say they wish they had done it sooner.

Not because they wanted a prettier picture.

Because they wanted one more piece of that chapter they can never go back to.

As a family photographer in Abilene, that’s the part of my job that means the most to me. I’m not just documenting smiles. I’m preserving the little details that time quietly carries away—the way your child wraps both arms around your neck, the laugh you didn’t know you had, the tiny expressions you’ll someday miss.

Those are the moments worth holding onto.

More Than a Pretty Picture

As a family photographer in Abilene, I’ve watched parents worry that their children won’t cooperate. I’ve had couples apologize because they felt awkward in front of the camera. I’ve met expecting moms who almost canceled because they didn’t feel beautiful enough.

Every single one of them left saying the same thing:

“I’m so glad we did this.”

Because your memories don’t care if your hair stayed perfect.

Your future self won’t notice the extra five pounds you were worried about.

Your children won’t remember whether your outfit was trendy enough.

They’ll remember your smile.

They’ll remember how you held them.

They’ll remember what it felt like to be loved.

That’s what photographs preserve.

When you look back years from now, you won’t be searching for perfection.

You’ll be searching for connection.

For proof that this season happened.

For the little expressions you had forgotten.

For the beautifully ordinary moments that quietly became part of your story.

As a portrait photographer in Abilene, Texas, I often tell my clients that my job isn’t simply to take beautiful photos. It’s to preserve a chapter of their life before it quietly becomes another page in their story.

Whether it’s welcoming your first baby, celebrating an engagement, documenting your growing family, or simply wanting updated portraits because life has changed, every season deserves to be remembered.

Not because it’s perfect.

Because it’s yours.

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s this:

Don’t wait until life feels picture-perfect.

Take the photos while your children still ask to be carried.

Take the photos while your parents can still wrap you in a hug.

Take the photos while your dog still runs to greet you at the door.

Take the photos while your laugh sounds the way it does today.

Take the photos because one day, you’ll wish you could step back into this ordinary moment for just a little while longer.

And when that day comes, you’ll be so thankful you didn’t wait.

Because the moments we think we’ll always remember are often the ones that fade the fastest.

The photographs help us find our way back home.

One Day, You’ll Be Looking Back

If you’re reading this in the middle of a busy week, consider this your gentle reminder to pause for just a second.

Look around.

Notice the coffee mug sitting on the counter. The toys scattered across the living room floor. The way your partner laughs from the other room. The tiny hands that still reach for yours without thinking. The dog sleeping in their favorite spot by the window.

None of it feels extraordinary today.

That’s exactly what makes it worth remembering.

The moments we miss most aren’t usually the milestones. They’re the quiet in-between moments that made up everyday life. The routines we thought we’d always have. The faces that changed a little each year. The places that once felt so ordinary they barely caught our attention.

As an Abilene family photographer, I’ve come to believe that photographs aren’t just about preserving what life looked like—they’re about preserving what life felt like. Years from now, these images will remind you of the little things your memory couldn’t hold onto by itself.

Because memories fade.

Photographs help them stay.

And one day, when you’re looking back on this season of life, I hope you’ll have more than stories to tell.

I hope you’ll have something to hold in your hands.
