One of the questions I get asked most often is, “What time should we schedule our photo session?” The truth is, timing matters more than most people realize. If you’re looking for the best time for outdoor photos in Abilene, TX, it all comes down to the light. The soft glow before sunset, the warmth in the sky, and the way the light wraps around the people you love can turn a simple moment into a memory that feels like home.

Let’s talk about Golden Hour

Golden hour is that dreamy window of time shortly after sunrise or just before sunset when the sun is low in the sky. The light is soft, warm, and oh-so-flattering — perfect for glowing skin tones and rich, romantic colors.

Why Midday Isn’t the Best

Midday light can be super bright and harsh, especially here in Abilene where we get strong sun most of the year. This can create unflattering shadows, squinting, and washed-out colors. If we have to shoot during midday (like for an event), I’ll do everything I can to find shade and work the light — but golden hour is always my first choice.

Can we Take Photos Earlier in the Day?

Technically, yes! But outdoor sessions scheduled in the middle of the day often have harsh sunlight, strong shadows, and more squinting. That’s why I typically recommend scheduling your session 1–2 hours before sunset whenever possible. The light is softer, warmer, and creates the dreamy, nostalgic feel you see throughout my portfolio.

Seasonal Tips for Abilene Sessions

  • Spring & Summer: During the spring and summer months, the sun typically sets between 7:30-8:30PM, which means most of my outdoor sessions begin around 6/6:30-7/7:30PM. This allow us to take advantage of that soft, golden light that creates the dreamy, glow you see throughout my portfolio.
  • Fall: In the fall, sunset usually falls between 6:00–7:00 PM, so sessions are often scheduled around 5:00–6/6:30 PM. The combination of earlier sunsets, golden tones, and cooler temperatures makes fall one of the most popular times of year for photos.
  • Winter: Winter sunsets arrive much earlier, often around 5:30-6:00PM, which means sessions typically begin around 4:00-5:00PM. The light tends to be softer and moodier, creating a cozy timeless feel.

Don’t worry about calculating sunset times yourself, I always recommend the best start time based on the season, location, and the look you’re hoping to achieve.
