If you’ve ever wondered when to schedule your outdoor session, here’s a little secret: the time of day can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. Light plays such a big role in the mood, color, and overall feel of your images — and when you catch the right kind of light, the results are pure magic.

Let’s talk about Golden Hour

Golden hour is that dreamy window of time shortly after sunrise or just before sunset when the sun is low in the sky. The light is soft, warm, and oh-so-flattering — perfect for glowing skin tones and rich, romantic colors.

Why Midday Isn’t the Best

Midday light can be super bright and harsh, especially here in Abilene where we get strong sun most of the year. This can create unflattering shadows, squinting, and washed-out colors. If we have to shoot during midday (like for an event), I’ll do everything I can to find shade and work the light — but golden hour is always my first choice.

Seasonal Tips for Abilene Sessions

  • Spring & Summer: Sunset happens later (usually between 7:30–8:30 PM), so evening sessions are ideal. Expect long, glowy light and rich greens.
  • Fall: The sun starts setting earlier (around 6:00–7:00 PM), and we sometimes get beautiful golden trees — especially at places like Cedar Creek and Buffalo Gap.
  • Winter: Golden hour can be as early as 4:30 PM, and the tones shift to cooler, softer light. It’s beautiful in a totally different way — think cozy, calm, and moody.
