One of the most common questions I get before a photo session is:
“What should we wear?”

And honestly? I love helping with this. The right outfits can completely enhance the way your photos look and feel—letting your connection shine through while matching the dreamy, golden tones of my editing style.

Whether you’re planning for spring wildflowers or fall leaves in Abilene, here’s how to choose outfits that photograph beautifully in every season.

Year-Round Style Tips That Always Work

No matter the time of year, these tips are my go-to recommendations to help your session feel comfortable, timeless, and true to you:

  • Stick to neutrals and earth tones: Think cream, tan, olive, rust, soft blues, warm browns, and muted pastels. These tones complement nature and look amazing with my nostalgic, sunlit editing style.
  • Avoid bold colors—especially red: Bright reds, neons, or intense hues can overpower the photo and clash with the soft, emotional tones I aim for in your images.
  • Texture over pattern: Linen, gauze, knit, corduroy, and soft cottons add depth without being loud.
  • Coordinate, don’t match: Choose a color palette, but let each person wear a variation or layer within it. It feels organic and relaxed.
  • Comfort is key: Choose outfits you can move, snuggle, and laugh in. If you’re comfortable, your photos will feel more authentic.

What to Wear for a Spring Photo Session

Spring sessions are filled with soft light, fresh blooms, and that just-woke-up-from-winter kind of joy.

For women: Flowy dresses in blush, cream, or sage green. Soft floral patterns are lovely, just avoid anything too bright or busy.
For men: Light button-downs or henleys in soft grey, tan, or pale blue with khaki or olive pants.
Kids: Simple rompers, linen overalls, or cotton sets in coordinating tones.

Pro Tip: Bring a light blanket for sitting on or snuggling—it doubles as a prop and comfort for little ones.

What to Wear for a Summer Photo Session

Summer means golden light, warm weather, and barefoot freedom. Light fabrics are your friend!

For women: Midi dresses in neutral tones, breezy skirts, or wide-leg pants with a tucked blouse. Avoid red or hot pink—they’ll overpower the light.
For men: Rolled-up sleeves, linen shirts, or solid tees in soft earth tones.
Kids: Lightweight cotton rompers or shorts with a neutral tee. Barefoot in the grass is always a yes.

Tip: Choose warm colors like mustard, tan, or faded terracotta to match the rich tones of summer sunsets.

What to Wear for a Fall Photo Session

Fall brings all the cozy textures, layered looks, and golden light we live for.

For women: Sweater dresses, chunky knits, boots, or skirts with tights. Stick to rust, mustard, olive, camel, or cream.
For men: Layers work great—try a henley under a jacket or flannel in a muted tone like forest green or navy.
Kids: Corduroy, boots, or cozy pullovers. Stay away from bright reds or oranges—they clash with the natural fall palette and editing style.

Tip: Add accessories like scarves or hats to bring depth to your images.

What to Wear for a Winter Photo Session

Winter light is soft and cool, which pairs beautifully with rich, neutral tones and layers.

For women: Long coats, chunky sweaters, boots, and accessories in deep greens, cranberry (muted), navy, or oatmeal.
For men: Dark jeans, layered textures like wool or fleece, and earth-toned jackets.
Kids: Puffer vests, warm knits, and cozy boots or beanies.

Tip: Stay away from stark whites or saturated colors—they can appear too harsh against the muted winter light.
