When I first started photography, I had so many questions. I remember sitting with my notebook (and my camera I barely knew how to use), and thinking, “I just need someone to talk to.”
So I reached out to multiple photographers- asking to meet up, grab coffee, and pick their brain. I wasn’t trying to take anything from them. I just genuinely needed help. Most didn’t answer. Some politely said no. But a couple kind souls did respond — and those small conversations meant everything to me.
One of them invited me to take a mentorship course she offered, and I jumped in. That experience gave me more than just practical tips. It gave me clarity, direction, and most importantly, confidence.
And now, I get it. I get how valuable it is to have someone in your corner when you’re just starting out — or even when you’ve been doing this for a while and feel stuck.
1. Learning from Someone Who’s Been There
Mentorship isn’t just about technical skills (although yes, those are helpful too.) It’s about having someone who’s walked the road ahead of you- someone who remembers what it’s like to be in your shoes.
A good mentor doesn’t just hand you a formula. They help you grow in your voice, your work, and your way.
2. Asking the Questions You Can’t Google
There are some things that Youtube tutorials or blog posts just can’t teach you- like:
- “What should I do when a session feels off?”
- “How do I stop undercharging and start owning my value?”
- “How do I balance creativity and business with out burning out?”
Mentorships gives you the space to ask those real, messy, behind-the-scenes questions and get answers that are actually specific to you.
3. Confidence Comes from Clarity
When you’re figuring it all out on your own, everything feels like guesswork. But when someone takes the time to listen, guide, and share what worked for them, things start to click.
You gain clarity- on your editing, your client experience, your pricing, your purpose. And that clarity builds confidence.
4. It’s Not Just About Business
Yes, mentorships can help you grow your business. But honestly? One of the biggest things I got out of a mentorship was knowing that I wasn’t alone.
Photography can feel so isolating- especially in the beginning. Having even one person who believes in you, answer your questions, and tells you you’re not crazy for chasing this dream? That matters more than you know.
5. Find a Mentor That Fits You
Every photographer teaches differently- and not every mentorship will be the right fit for every person. That’s okay! Do you research. Look for someone whose work and vibe inspires you, but also someone who makes you feel comfortable and supported.
Whether it’s me or someone else, finding the right fit makes the experience way more meaningful and valuable.
So Here’s What I Want You to Know
If you’ve been craving guidance…
If you’re tired of Googling every tiny thing…
If you’re wishing someone would just sit down and help you figure it out…
I get it.
I’ve been there.
And I’d be honored to be that person for you!
Because you don’t have to do this alone.
